Distance Learning Dance Curriculum

Guest Artist
Remote, Tokyo and Richmond, Virginia, 2021

As Covid-19 forced high schools across America to switch to remote learning, I was extremely inspired by dance teacher Theresa Niermeyer, who had been utilizing the pandemic limitations to create a learning opportunity for her dance students to learn other skills remotely: teaching them to make dance films, choreograph site specific work and even create their own music.

As a guest artist, I created the “Dance and the Digital World” curriculum. This curriculum consisted of a website and a series of sketches made on p5.js utilizing PoseNet to create real-time interactions with dancers via webcam and internet browser. The primary goal was to expose students to ideas about Computer Vision, Machine Learning and real-time interactions. Most importantly, we wanted to show them that they could be creators of digital media and technology instead of just passive consumers.

Thanks to Leisa Taylor, Anna House and Theresa Niermeyer (shown in gifs below) for contributing their artistry.
